What we offer
-
When you join our group as an associate member you will be allocated an observer who will accompany you on a series (usually 6-12) of observed drives in your own car (which may be manual or automatic). Your observer will recommend to you what you need to change about your driving, and how to make the changes.
- He or she will help, guide, advise and encourage you to attain the required standard for the advanced test.
-
This guidance is FREE apart from the associate membership fee (see below). The training you receive is based on "Roadcraft" (the police drivers' manual). Using the police system of driving, your responses and observation on the road will improve, you will learn always to be in the right place, at the right speed, and in the right gear to deal with all hazards safely and smoothly.
-
At the same time as taking observed drives, your observer will expect you to read up on advanced driving topics. It is important to be familiar with the up-to-date Highway Code, and with Pass Your Advanced Driving Test published by the IAM. See
Books.
-
Over 90% of our associates pass first time. Examiners are human and are happy to talk to you about your driving, and although habitual speeding is a guaranteed fail, minor faults, when
recognised and not repeated, will not necessarily lead to a fail.
-
We also publish a monthly newsletter and have group meetings most months of the year as well as other social activities and trips. There are three meetings especially for associates each year. For more information please see
Meetings & Social Activities
- Once you have passed your test you do
not HAVE to remain a member of the group (although we'd love you to do
so!) - BUT you do have to keep up your membership with the IAM in order to
call yourself an advanced motorist.
